I bought Tommy in Texas for $1800. It was the last of my savings, but well worth it. He had a rough start to life, as his dam died from complications of his birth. He was hand raised by humans and trained as a race horse.
Tommy did not like racing, so they used him as a lead pony for a few years. His owners needed to cut down on bills, so Tommy was sent to Carousel Farm to get sold. A friend of mine urged me to come look at this "cute gelding" for sale. So, without meaning to buy a horse, I went to see him. I fell in love with him instantly and knew I needed to buy him quickly. So, off to his new home he went.
It took a long time to get Tommy going. He did not have much self-confidence, and needed me to be build his comfidence and be his friend. We did a lot of trail riding for our first year together, and gymnastics, poles on the ground and easy, easy XC stuff. Once he "got it" he became a jumping machine!
Over our time together, we excelled to Advanced level. I did five 3-day events with him and won numerous awards over the years. (in the right column is a listing of our accomplishments together.) In 2002, Tommy sustained a career ending injury to his hind leg. He had developed scar tissue on his tendon sheath, causing the anular ligament to thicken. After several surgeries, we decided to retire him. He spent a few years at a riding for the handicapped in Illinois, where he was pampered and loved. He is now at a Hunter Jumper barn in Illinois, teaching young kids how to jump. He is very well cared for and very happy. He is 19 years old this year.
